In a gesture of cultural diplomacy and goodwill, Prime Minister Narendra Modi presented traditional Indian gifts to Croatian leaders during his historic visit to the European nation—the first by an Indian Prime Minister. PM Modi gifted a silver candle stand from Rajasthan to Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic, and a traditional Pattachitra painting from Odisha to President Zoran Milanovic.

The silver candlestand, handcrafted by Rajasthani artisans, is a fine example of the state’s renowned silverwork. Adorned with intricate floral and geometric engravings, the piece reflects royal elegance and timeless craftsmanship. Its design draws inspiration from Rajasthan’s architectural heritage, making it both a functional and decorative artefact.

To President Milanovic, PM Modi gifted a Pattachitra painting, a revered folk art form of Odisha. Created with natural dyes on cloth, the artwork narrates key episodes from Lord Krishna’s life, including the Ras Leela and Govardhan lifting, encapsulated in bold lines and vibrant colours. This centuries-old art, practised by generations in Raghurajpur village, holds spiritual and storytelling significance rooted in India’s cultural and temple traditions.

PM Modi also held bilateral meetings with both Croatian leaders. In his meeting with President Milanovic, the Prime Minister discussed the entire spectrum of India-Croatia relations, with a focus on expanding cultural and commercial ties.

Earlier in the day, PM Modi and PM Plenkovic led delegation-level talks in Zagreb, where they explored collaboration in defence, trade, science and technology, renewable energy, tourism, and digitalisation. According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), both leaders acknowledged the strong potential for increased cooperation in key sectors including infrastructure, ports, AI, and pharmaceuticals.

“Met Mr. Zoran Milanovic, the President of Croatia. Had extensive discussions on the full range of India-Croatia friendship, including ways to boost linkages of commerce and culture,” PM Modi wrote on X.

PM Modi’s visit to Croatia was the final leg of his three-nation tour, which included Cyprus, participation in the G7 Summit in Canada, and a landmark stop in Croatia. The visit marked a new chapter in India-Croatia relations, with both countries committing to deepen their strategic partnership across diverse sectors.
